Community

Girl Get Moving!

Girl Get Moving with Dr. Sonya is a community created to encourage, prepare and support women seeking upper-level management careers. The group connects women with common interests, ideas and goals for achieving career mobility and success. We share motivational and inspirational topics to help women move from stagnant to thriving lifestyles. Members of this group are women of various professions. Our goal is to positively impact the mindset and belief systems of professionally women and provide strategies for success during their career journey.

This group was launched with Dr. Sonya Shaw’s new book called Girl Get Moving! Your Career Dreams Are Waiting On You! Resources from the book and Dr. Shaw’s research are shared through posts and personal stories. This community is here to celebrate women choosing themselves and prioritizing their personal and professional growth needs while providing a platform to support those efforts.

Women of Color
in Recreation and Parks
(WCRP)

Dr. Sonya R. Shaw, Founder of WCRP, has a heart and passion for helping women leaders pursue career mobility. WCRP is a group for women of color currently employed in or retired from the parks and recreation profession. This group page creates a space for women of color to network, share stories, exchange resources and provide encouragement to each other as we navigate the field of parks and recreation together.

WCRP has offered speaker series with a dynamic panel of women leaders in parks and recreation discussing career mobility, leadership journey, challenges faced, success strategies, and necessary skills, relationships, and support systems vital to their career journey. Each year at the National Recreation and Park Association Conference, WCRP sponsors networking socials for members across the county to connect with each other and build positive relationships for future collaborations. WCRP’s history and achievements were recently featured in the Fall 2022 Significance in Athletics and Sports Magazine.
